Alesha Dixon’s 3 powerful values for raising confident, strong daughters
Like most mums, WH cover star Alesha Dixon is deeply committed to instilling meaningful values in her daughters, so that they grow up equipped with the right tools to get to where they want to be.
Central to her approach are three core principles: self-acceptance, authenticity, and the importance of exercise for your mental health. Here, she lays out the values that are more than lessons – they are the foundation of a life led with integrity, resilience, and a deep sense of self.
1/ Authenticity
'I never had a game plan. The only thing I would ever say to myself is don't try and be something you're not. That's how I try to authentically show up to anything that I'm doing.'
My mum was like, “When you wake up in the morning, it’s really important that you love what you do and that you’re happy, because then you’re not going to feel like you’re working.”’
2/ Self-acceptance
‘Building up self-esteem is important. Comparison is the thief of joy and so I always tell my girls that there's only one of you in the world, and that's special. You don’t have to look like that person to be beautiful. You don’t have to act like that person or do what that person is doing or have what that person has. What do you have? What are your qualities? Everyone is unique and has something to offer. That’s the dialogue my mum gave to me. So that’s what I’ll be saying to my girls.’
3/ Exercise
‘Fitness is my therapy. The more you stop working out for the vanity aspect and work out because you recognise it's best for your mind, it becomes your best friend. I’ve made that connection; if I’m not working out, I can get quite low, don’t feel great about myself, and I can get into a negative mindset. But when I’m consistent with working out, everything’s manageable. It has a ripple effect on all my other choices throughout the day.’
