Aldi's New 'Game Changing' Snack Has a Shocking Ingredient

Now that it’s March, we can turn our attention to St. Patrick’s Day and all the American traditions that come with it—especially the food and drinks that are part of the celebration. When you think of St. Patrick’s Day foods, several come to mind, like corned beef and cabbage, Irish potatoes, brown bread, drinks loaded with Irish cream, and beer, of course.

Another popular treat that excites many people around St. Patrick’s Day is the Shamrock Shake, whether it’s the original McDonald’s minty green shake or a DIY version. There’s one ingredient neither the fast-food nor the homemade versions of the Shamrock Shake contain: shamrock, one of Ireland’s national emblems.

Is there any food that actually contains shamrock? There is at least one, and Aldi has it for a limited time.

Keogh’s New Shamrock and Sour Cream Potato Crisps at Aldi

Clover is edible, and Keogh’s, a company that makes potatoes, crisps, and popcorn out of Dublin, Ireland, produces the Shamrock and Sour Cream Potato Crisps (the Irish term for potato chips) made with shamrock extract.

The crisps are thick cut with skins on, and the potatoes are grown on the Keogh family farm. A QR code on the back of the bag allows snackers to see precisely which Irish field farmed the potatoes.

All that is pretty cool, but the most important thing you want to know when buying potato chips you’ve never had before is how they taste.

What Do Shamrock Potato Chips Taste Like?

When Instagram's Adventures in Aldi posted a video of the Shamrock and Sour Cream Crisps and the brand's Original Atlantic Sea Salt Crisps, she called them a "game changer."

"We we are sooo lucky to have them at Aldi for the lead up to St. Patrick's Day! They are 100% Irish potato chips with the unique Irish flavors such as real shamrock Soooo delish!" she wrote in the caption.

When a follower asked, "Is it just sour cream and onion??" Adventures in Aldi replied, "It's shamrock!! Actual shamrock! But does taste a lot like sour cream and onion!"

"They are the best potato chips I have ever tasted!" one follower commented. And another, who bought them when she was in Ireland, says they're "So good!!"

You can find these unique potato chips made with real shamrock in the Aldi special buys food aisle until March 13, when they'll disappear, perhaps to make another appearance next year.

However, if you can't get to Aldi, some commenters said they've found them in other stores, including World Market, and they are available for order on Amazon and Keogh's website.
