Aldi is the latest supermarket to confirm that stores across Scotland will be remaining closed following severe weather warnings.

As Storm Éowyn causes widespread disruption, the Met Office has issued rare red 'danger to life' warnings across certain parts of the country. The warning took place from 10am and will remain in place until 5pm.

As a result, Aldi confirmed earlier this morning that stores based in the red warning zones would be remaining closed today, Friday, January 24. Stores have been closed since 9am and will remain so until 6pm.

The supermarket giant added that the decision was made "to ensure the safety of our team and customers". It also added that it would be "monitoring the situation" and would share updates with customers.

Aldi's full statement read: "Due to Storm Éowyn across Scotland today (Friday 24th January), all of our Aldi Scotland stores in the Red Weather Warning areas will be closed from 9am to 6pm to ensure the safety of our teams and customers.

"We’re closely monitoring the situation and will share updates here if there are any further changes."

It comes just after Asda also announced earlier this morning that stores across Scotland in the worst hit regions had been closed since 9am. The move affects more than 60 Superstores and Express stores, with the full list available here.

Meanwhile, Tesco updated its customers yesterday to confirm that stores would also remain closed today. The supermarket sent emails to customers based in areas including Ayrshire, Glasgow and Stirling advising them of the decision.

It's not just supermarkets closing their doors, as several local authorities and schools have also confirmed closures. With Scots being urged to stay safe at home, many travel operators have also cancelled journeys today.

Storm Éowyn is set to bring high winds of up to 100mph across certain parts of Scotland today. The warning for wind covers most of the Central Belt areas, including Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Red warnings are the highest the Met Office can issue and they are put in place when there is a serious risk to life posed by adverse weather conditions.

An amber warning has also been put in place across the whole country and will be in effect until 9pm tonight. Meanwhile, Grampian, Tayside and the Highlands have been issued a yellow snow warning until 11:59pm.
