Aldi's story begins when Anna Albrecht, the mother of Karl and Theo Albrecht, opened a small grocery store in Essen, Germany. The store prioritized low prices and quality products. After World War II, Anna's sons, Karl and Theo Albrecht, took over the family business. They focused on offering essential goods at low prices, catering to post-war Germany's economic challenges. Their strategy was to keep costs low by limiting the range of products and focusing on high-turnover items.

By the late 1940s, the Albrecht brothers had expanded to over a dozen stores in Germany. The brothers formally branded their business as Aldi in 1962, short for "Albrecht-Diskont" (Albrecht Discount). A disagreement between Karl and Theo about selling cigarettes led to the company's division: Aldi Nord (North): Operated by Theo Albrecht. Aldi Süd (South): Managed by Karl Albrecht.

Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd began international expansion in the 1970s Aldi Nord entered countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, and Denmark. Aldi Süd expanded to Austria, the UK, Ireland, and the US.
