Valentine's Day may be just around the corner, but it looks like love is no longer in the air for Aldi after it cheekily responded to being "dumped" by Asda. The German retailer's witty social media team are often on the ball when it comes to delivering blows online.

So when Asda announced it would no longer be offering prices matched to Aldi, the budget supermarket stepped in with its own response. The 'Big Four' grocer confirmed earlier this week that it has discontinued its price match campaign with both Aldi and Lidl.

It comes just 12 months after the initiative was launched, becoming the first supermarket to do so. An Asda spokesperson explained that the decision behind the move was so it could focus on the launch of its new 'Rollback' scheme.

The firm also explained that it wanted to focus 2025 on "its own great Asda prices, not competitor comparisons." In true Aldi fashion, the budget discounter took to X to share its own thoughts behind the split.

Sharing a screenshot of Asda's website that once displayed the incentive that is now no longer available, it wrote: "POV: You get dumped over text @asda."

Naturally, numerous shoppers found the humour in the firm's response to being ditched by its fellow supermarket, with many making their break-up puns and jokes at the decision being made just ahead of Valentine's Day.

One Aldi fan cheekily responded: "Aldi #1 keep ASDA in the friend zone where it belongs!" Someone else joked: "Shots fired :D."

Another impressed shopper added: "Not even a phone call that's just rude never mend sainsburys still matches your prices." Someone else wittily responded: "And right before Valentines Day too.....SHAMEFUL!!"

Another X user also brought rival Lidl into the mix, after it was also unfairly 'dumped'. They wrote: "I hope you and @LidlGB are supporting each other at this difficult time."

Asda's price-match scheme was first launched in January 2024, with items available to buy both online and in store. It had reduced prices by of weekly shopping staples by an average of 17 percent.

Despite the scheme being axed, the supermarket has confirmed that prices have not been increased following the move. Meanwhile, retailers Sainsbury's and Tesco still offer their own price match campaign with the German discounter.
