The Air Jordan 1 High '85 “Banned” (2025) Drops on Valentine's Day
When you're a proper bill-paying, always-something-to-save-for adult, it's hard to justify spending money on trainers. There's usually something “more important” that's claimed your earnings, and when there isn't, it's someone else's birthday. (How dare they celebrate as I do.)
Nike is aware of the struggle, which is why it's good at giving us sneakerheads ways to justify our purchases. The latest example: encouraging self-love this Valentine's Day by dropping a God-tier classic, the Air Jordan 1 High “banned”.
On the year of the silhouette's 40th anniversary, I should note.
That's two reasons to make a trip to the savings.
The Swoosh confirmed the incoming reissue today on its SNKRS app. A short film created for the platform wonders what the world would look like if Nike eschewed the famous fine by following the rules.
(For those who don't know the legend of the OG Air Jordan 1, it is said to have been banned by the NBA as its black and red appearance breached the uniform policy. Though modern reports claim this account is fictitious, Nike perpetuates the narrative.)
Above this video on the app's homepage is a second which delves into the design of the re-release, the first in nine years. It reveals that teams at Nike are working towards a 1 to 1 replication – “down to the stitch length, down to the thickness of the leather, down the finish on the wings logo,” reveals one narrator.
“There wasn't a recipe book that was left behind by the original team”, says the other narrator who is revealed as Jason Grisby, product director of Jordan Brand. “We had to basically creative this from scratch – sort of reverse engineer it”
In short: a lot of love has gone into it. ❤️
