How to adopt Jennifer Aniston's 80/20 wellbeing approach to live with 'no restrictions', per expert advice
Jennifer Aniston's attitude to wellbeing is something we could all try incorporating into our lifestyles, whatever our financial or temporal budgets.
The Friends actress, 56, says she takes the '80/20 approach' to health and wellness, which involves '80% healthy living' and 20% indulgence and having fun.
Speaking to Allure, she explained that her lifestyle comprised 'no restrictions – except hard drugs. You've got to live your life. 80% healthy living and then 20% is: go have a martini, go have your pizza and burgers and stay up late with your friends. There's a balance.'
Not subscribing to stringent rules, Jennifer's instead clearly taken a sustainable, more moderate route throughout her career. 'We're good at enjoying ourselves – me and my friends,' she continued. 'We've done it for 30, 35 years. A beautiful martini is a lovely way to relax.'
Incorporating a softer tone applies to her mental attitude, too. 'I’m a big believer in trying not to be hard on yourself because the world is so mean right now and so aggressive and negative', she said.
Like many, she's also been trying to work on improving her sleep quality – though she 'hates' the phrase 'sleep hygiene'. 'Sleep and I have a real hard relationship', she admitted. Generally, she attempts to establish a routine. 'I've been trying hard to put myself in bed during the week at 10pm, turn everything off and then just sit there and let the world come crashing in.' Relaxation practices help her wind down: 'I meditate in the morning. I stretch before bed.'
How to adopt Jennifer Aniston's 80/20 approach
80% healthy: set realistic habits
The 80/20 approach offers a sustainable way to manage wellbeing, says Dr Rimas Geiga, registered dietitian nutritionist at Glow Bar LDN. 'For the 80% healthy, focus on nutrient-dense foods, regular physical activity, and adequate sleep most of the time.
'Set realistic goals for healthy eating and exercise during your weekdays, like meal prepping, choosing nutritious snacks, and fitting in short workouts,' agrees Danny Zane, therapist at North London Therapy Practice.
20% indulgence: choose specific times and enjoy them guilt-free
'Use weekends or specific days for treats, such as binge-watching your favourite shows,' continues Zane, or skipping a workout.
'Schedule a lazy or rest day, or consider having intentional breaks, like setting a timer for social,' agrees Sarah Campus, PT, instructor, nutrition coach and founder of LDN MUMS FITNESS. 'Consistency, not perfection, is key. You prioritise productivity, but create a sustainable lifestyle that supports your holistic wellbeing and your need for enjoyment.'
The 80% foundation allows for the 20% indulgence without guilt or significant setbacks, notes Dr Geiga. 'The crucial point is to truly enjoy the 20% without overdoing it, and then gently return to the healthy routines.'
Track your habits
'Track your habits for a week or two to see where you stand and identify areas for adjustment,' advises Dr Geiga. 'This helps personalise the 80/20 approach and make it work for your lifestyle. The key to successful implementation lies in mindful planning and self-awareness.'
