This is how to ace your application video for The Traitors series 4
Haven't we all had that moment where we've watched an episode of BBC One's The Traitors and thought, "Oh I'd love to go on that"? Even if it is just to see Claudia Winkleman's wardrobe in all its fashionable glory. The good news is that any of us could in fact make it onto the show - and we've been busy figuring out exactly how to do it.
The Traitors bosses are officially on the hunt for new contestants to take part in series 4 (you can apply through the production company, Studio Lambert) and they’ve got some requirements. Besides the basics (name, age, where you’re from, etc), they want to see your social media profiles: TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and X. There’s also a Q&A, which asks questions such as why you want to be on the show and whether you’d rather be a Traitor or a Faithful and what your strategy might be.
So far, so straightforward. But then there's the all-important one-minute video of yourself speaking to the camera. Sound a tag more daunting? We thought so, which is why we’ve been gleaning all the information we can about what makes a good one - and we think we might have cracked it. See you at the castle.
Think you'd be a good Traitor? Prove how deceptive you can be
Remember Charlotte’s Welsh accent in the most recent series? Silly question – how could anyone forget it? Yes, it was baffling, but it also got her on the show (and possibly, to the final). In the series 3 reunion show, she revealed she’d actually adopted the accent for her application video to prove her ability to deceive. So, what will it be then – Brummie, Irish or Cockney?
Know your personality traits - and exaggerate them
Full disclosure, we may have stolen this gem from series 1 contestant Aaron (thanks Aaron), who has kindly shared a video on YouTube full of brilliant advice on how to get on the show. “Ask yourself what your key personality traits are - ask friends and family, too – and write them down on a piece of paper,” he says. “Once you’ve got that, double down on those traits and what I mean by that is exaggerate them. If you’re logical thinking, come across that way. If you’re a bit ditsy, come across as if you’re ditsy.” According to Aaron, the producers have key personality boxes to tick and they need to be sure they’ve got each of those filled.
Can you keep a secret? Prove it
What's the biggest secret you've ever had to keep? Did you manage it? If the answer is yes, you might want to mention it in your video. Filming on The Traitors often takes place up to a year before the show airs - and in that time, contestants are required to keep the whole thing a secret. From everyone. In fact, Leanne and Jake from series 3 recently revealed that they required therapy to ensure the secrets were not let out of the bag. So why not show the bosses how easily you could do it?
Decide on your story and share it
It turns out that Amanda from series 1 also has some rather good advice. "Be clear about why you want to go on the show," she says. Is the reason you want to go on because you want the experience, the money, the fame - or do you simply want to play the game? Be clear about what it is and tell them. We’re guessing "to make friends with Claudia so we can borrow her clothes" may not pass muster, but if you're wanting to fund IVF (see series 3) on the other hand, you might be in with a chance.
Are you fit enough? Show them you are
According to 74-year-old Faithful Andrea from series 1, you have to be pretty fit to be on the show. There are plenty of challenges, after all - and then there's the heart-pumping anxiety that comes with every round table. “So if you do football or rugby, make sure you put it on your application,” Andrea says. Even better, why not show the bosses how fit you are in your video? Part of a fitness club? Film it there.
