You may assume that Covid has made the low-key wedding as much a necessity in the higher echelons of society as for the rest of us, but the evidence from Athens this weekend was that it’s in fact become an excuse for having multiple, increasingly extravagant nuptials across various countries over many months.

Prince Philippos of Greece, youngest son of ex-King Constantine of Greece and Queen Anne-Marie, first married Nina Flohr, daughter of Swiss billionaire Thomas Flohr and his wife Katharina Konečný, who has worked for Fabergé and Vogue Russia, in a civil ceremony in St Moritz last year, after which Flohr became a poster woman for chic small-scale bridal style thanks to the Chanel jacket and hair bow which she wore for the wedding.

Given that it was only the couple’s fathers who attended their first wedding, it was understandable that they’d celebrate with a wider group of friends and family, which is exactly what they did in May when high-society friends Alice Naylor-Leyland and her husband Tom threw them a party at their home, Stibbington House in Cambridgeshire - there were flowers, cake cutting and designer dresses galore at the festivities but the newlyweds didn’t stop there.

This weekend, European royals gathered in Athens for the most upscale version of the celebrations so far. Spread across three days, Philippos - whose illustrious coterie of godparents included Prince Philip and Diana, Princess of Wales - and Nina welcomed Danish, Monegasque, German, Spanish and British royalty for the glitziest show of regal style so far this year.

These were the best-dressed attendees...

The bride

Princess Nina stayed loyal to Chanel, the house she wore for her civil ceremony last year, commissioning three new outfits to wear across the celebrations. The piece de resistance was her gown for the main event on Saturday, a white version of an empire-line, off-shoulder design from the label’s autumn 2020 couture collection with a fan detail at the waist and delicate crystal embellishments around the neckline and on the train which cascaded down the steps of Athens Cathedral.

The bride topped off the look with a diamond tiara loaned to her by her new mother-in-law, Queen Anne-Marie and originally part of the Danish royal jewellery collection.

On Friday evening, Nina chose a puff-sleeved gown from the same collection while for Sunday’s post-wedding gathering, she opted for a cream jacket and long skirt from Chanel’s pre-fall 2021 range.

Princess Beatrice

Just a month after giving birth to her first child, Sienna Elizabeth, Princess Beatrice dialled up the glamour for Philippos and Nina’s wedding, wearing a Gucci gown embroidered with a sequined bow for the main religious ceremony.

While many would be tempted to splash out on something new when attending such a high-profile event in the early days of motherhood, Beatrice continued the recycling theme of her wedding (for which she wore one her grandmother’s vintage Norman Hartnell dresses) delved into her wardrobe instead, wearing the same outfit first seen at a charity gala in 2018. Her half-up, half-down hair ‘do gave the look a new twist.

Princess Eugenie showed that black can be anything but boring with her guest look, wearing a gathered, brooch-adorned black gown by her own wedding dress designer, Peter Pilotto. Like her sister, Eugenie was also recycling a previously seen dress. She accessorised the look with Gabriela Hearst’s sculptural pleated ‘Diana’ bag.

Marie-Chantal of Greece and Olympia of Greece

As the wife of the groom’s older brother and designer of the bridesmaids’ dresses, Marie Chantal of Greece played a starring supportive role in the proceedings. As such, she chose to commission a bespoke gown for the marriage ceremony from Greek designer Mary Katrantzou, who created a dove grey column dress with pretty floral embroidery detailing. She finished the outfit with a belt by Elie Saab.

Meanwhile, Marie-Chantal’s daughter Olympia followed her mother’s form-fitting lead, donning a streamlined, square-neckline, midi-length dress, thought to be by Emilia Wickstead, in the same shade of sky blue as the Greek flag, with a matching pair of ‘Hangisi’ Manolo Blahnik heels - a style which will be familiar to fans of Sex and the City - perhaps Olympia has been watching re-runs in readiness for the And Just lIke That… reboot.

Alessandra de Osma

Alessandra de Osma, wife of Prince Christian of Hanover, who had her own super-stylish bridal moment in 2018 wearing a lace gown by Jorge Vázquez, chose a bold fuschia maxi dress for the religious ceremony, living up to her reputation as one of the most elegant young European royals. The design, by Andrew Gn, was completed with balloon sleeves and necklace-like green gem embroidery at the neckline.

The next day, de Osma followed up her dramatic wedding guest look, attending the post-wedding celebrations wearing an orange, horse-print dress by Johanna Ortiz with relaxed black espadrilles.

Socialites and mothers of bridesmaids Gene Getty and Nancy Naylor-Leyland made their own style statements at the wedding. Tatler editor-at-large Sabine opted for an uplifting yet meticulously tailored yellow look by Emilia Wickstead which matched the sash of her daughter’s Marie-Chantal bridesmaid’s dress while Alice, who hosted the couple’s second round of wedding celebrations, opted for a pale blue gown with sheer sleeves.

Tatiana Santo Domingo

Tatiana Santo Domingo, wife of Andrea Casiraghi (son of Princess Caroline of Monaco), continued the hot pink theme established by Alessandra de Osma, wearing a flowing chiffon Giambattista Valli gown with a pussy-bow neckline. She added a little fun to the look with a pair of heart-shaped YSL sunglasses which she wore en-route to the ceremony - the perfect accessory for a romantic royal celebration.
