Budgeting for furniture and decor can be a challenge. While you might want to spend a bit more on a sofa, bed, or other big-ticket items, you don’t need to blow the bank on every single thing for your home. Discount stores like Target, HomeGoods, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, or At Home can be worth exploring for home essentials where the highest quality or a brand name isn’t all that crucial. Or, perhaps you simply love to walk the aisles and hunt around for a great deal, which can be a fun way to spend an afternoon. Either way, here are eight things you can (and should) always buy at discount stores—rather than high-end retailers.

Decor

Buying new decor is a great way to make your home feel more up-to-date. Whether it's a trendy vase or a colorful throw—you can always find great prices on these types of items. After all, if its something trendy you probably aren’t going to keep it forever, so why spend more than you have to?

Seasonal Items

Whether it's ornaments during the holidays or citronella candles around July 4th, discount stores are chock-full of fantastic seasonal items. If you love to decorate for any holiday, whether it's Valentine’s Day or Halloween, you’ll find lots of great options at every discount store. Don’t forget to check out the clearance aisle after each holiday is over so you can stock up for next year.

Side Tables

Discount stores generally aren’t the best places to buy large furniture items, but side tables are the exception to the rule. That’s because side tables are rarely subject to a lot of wear and tear, so the quality of materials doesn’t need to be a major priority. Just make sure it fits in your car.

Throw Pillows

Discount stores usually have a plethora of throw pillows. If you're the kind of person who likes to change out their pillows seasonally, there’s no need to blow your budget on something pricy.

Pro tip: Many discount stores, like HomeGoods, get new shipments weekly. So, if you don’t see pillows that coordinate with your home when you visit, feel free to ask an employee what day the new ones come in, and be sure to stop by when the selection is fresh.

Towels

Are your towels looking worn out? Are the threads pulled? Or worse—are they no longer absorbent? It’s probably time for a new set. A fresh set of towels can be very expensive, but you can find quality towels at a great price at discount stores. Remember, you don’t need to go for high design in this category. Plain white towels will complement just about any style of bathroom.

Lastly, while you might not find them all year round, discount stores are a great place to pick up beach or pool towels as well.

Bathroom Accessories

Is your soap pump no longer functional? Is your bathroom wastebasket still a little stinky no matter how much you clean it? Discount stores are an ideal place to buy bathroom accessories. Add some new towels, and it's basically a bathroom makeover at a price that won’t make you cringe.

While you’re in the bathroom decor aisle, it’s never a bad idea to pick up a new shower curtain and liner.

Bedding

Bedding is so easy to overspend on, but you don’t need to splurge. A high thread count doesn’t necessarily have to mean a high price. Another great find at discount stores is a “bed in a bag,” which usually includes a comforter or duvet, sheets, shams, and sometimes even decorative pillows.

Discount stores are also particularly good for kids’ rooms, where you will likely swap out the bedding every few years anyway.

Kitchen Tools

Did the handle break on your spatula? Has your whisk seen better days? Discount stores have the best prices on kitchen items you use every day. Better yet, they often have a mix of brands, so you can find quality essentials for less than what you’d pay in other stores.
