Alternatively, the Amazon Echo Dot's sound quality is more than enough for home use, and it’s very easy to set up and control via the Alexa phone app, too.

A compact and portable console, the convenient Lite is easy to use on trains, planes and when sitting in the backseat during a long car journey. This handheld doesn't plug into a TV but is just as good for playing top Switch titles like Zelda, Pokémon and Mario Kart on the go.

For iPhone users who regularly find their battery draining before the end of the working day, the Belkin BoostCharge 5K uses magnets to securely snap onto the back of the handset and deliver a steady stream of power. The capacity isn’t enough to refuel an iPhone multiple times without needing a top-up itself, but it’s great to have in a pinch. We love the built-in kickstand, too.
Amazon Kindle
We’re fans of the standard Kindle for those on the go. Compared to the Paperwhite, this one is more compact and lightweight. It still has a high-res screen, a long battery life and space to hold thousands of books. These devices are ideal for travel but they’re just as good for dipping into your book while relaxing on the sofa or in a coffee shop. This isn’t waterproof, however, so it’s not one for the poolside.
Bang & Olufsen Beosound Explore
The Beosound Explore is one of our favourite rugged outdoor wireless speakers. With full water and dust protection, up to 27 hours of battery life between charges and a built-in carabiner for attaching it to a bag or backpack, this is tailor-made for surviving adventures. And yes, it works just as well for blasting some music during a garden party, too.
JBL Clip 5
Small speakers don’t necessarily sound tinny or unimpressive nowadays, and the JBL Clip 5 launched this year proves that. It’s a compact little Bluetooth accessory that offers great sound, loads of battery life (12 hours), a handy built-in clip and app connectivity for customisation. The Clip 5 compares well to the smaller Go 4 too, and we’d go with the most compact model if a travel-ready size matters more to you than sound quality.
Nothing Phone (2a)
This 2024 launch is one of the most affordable smartphones around but that doesn’t mean it’s not a top performer. The Phone (2a) delivers a big bright screen, capable cameras, a massive battery and a unique semi-transparent design. It also has the excellent minimalist Nothing OS, and a set of “Glyph” lights on the back that can highlight important notifications and function as a timer when the phone is facing with its screen down.
Dyson OnTrac headphones
Now we know this is hardly an affordable gift, but Dyson’s latest headphones are worth the money. The high-end Dyson OnTrac over-ears are big and make a statement with bold colours – they’re excellent for sound quality and noise-cancelling, and they’re surprisingly comfortable with some clever weight distribution too.
Instax Mini 12
Another of our favourite instant cameras and a top pick for beginners, the Instax Mini 12 is a fantastic compact gadget for quickly snapping and printing small rectangular snaps that can go in a photo album, be pinned to the wall or popped in a purse. They’re just the right size to display in a wallet.
Peak Design Small Tech Pouch
Anyone who regularly commutes to work or travels a lot will know the satisfaction of cable and gadget organisation. Forget about untangling a mess of charging cords or searching at the bottom of a bag for the right connector, this travel pouch has compartments for a mouse, laptop power adapter, tablet stylus, and power bank or portable USB drive. It comes in attractive colour options, too.
Bose QuietComfort SC
There really isn’t much of a difference between the Bose QuietComfort SC and the Bose QuietComfort headphones, which are some of our favourite noise-cancelling over-ears. The only minor difference is that the SC come with a soft case (hence ‘SC’) rather than a hard case, and the only available colour is black. They’re otherwise identical for sound quality, noise control, battery life and, most crucially, comfort. You can’t go wrong.
Apple iPad 10th Gen
Apple makes some of our favourite tablets, and the 10th-generation iPad is the best beginner iPad for most people. There’s no more big touch button on the front, and it comes in four eye-catching colours: blue, pink, silver and yellow. It also has more than enough power for casual use – streaming, browsing social media, sending emails or drawing with the Apple Pencil. Want a further upgrade? Look to the more capable iPad Air, launched this year, which works with more accessories, is faster and has a better display.
GoPro HERO13 Black
Shopping for an outdoor enthusiast? GoPro cameras are the ultimate way of capturing high-resolution point-of-view footage during adventures – whether that’s skiing, surfing, diving or driving. The HERO13 Black is compact, lightweight, easy to set up and automatically adjusts the video stabilisation based on movements.
Dyson Airwrap
This high-end styler can be used to dry, curl and straighten your hair with ease, all while hiding flyaway strands and limiting heat damage. Our testers at the Good Housekeeping Institute praised this set as being the ‘best hot brush’, while our reviewer also had very few complaints, noting it made the morning hair routine “a much more zen experience.”
Puro Sound Labs JuniorJam Plus
One of our top pairs of headphones for kids is the JuniorJam Plus from Puro – a Bluetooth set that’s suggested for children aged six and up (but can be used by younger kids if you want).
