Starry Night, The Bedroom, Almond Blossoms—Vincent Van Gogh impressively made hundreds of pieces of artwork throughout his lifetime. But besides producing some of the world’s most famous paintings, he also influenced countless aspiring artists, some of whom became household names themselves. From Picasso to Hockney, here are seven incredible artists Van Gogh inspired. You may be surprised.

Pablo Picasso

Van Gogh’s influence on Pablo Picasso became recognizable in the mid-1960s. During this time, Picasso began painting self-portraits with many stylistic similarities to the work of the late great Van Gogh, such as the rich brush strokes and striking colors.

Paul Gaugin

Van Gogh and fellow artist, Paul Gaugin, lived together as roommates in Arles, France, in the late-1880s, so it’s no surprise that either one influenced the others’ work during this time. This living situation only lasted briefly, though—Van Gogh famously cut off part of his ear after just two months of living together. This caused Gaugin to quickly relocate back to Paris.

Henri Matisse

Did you know Henri Matisse discovered his love for painting while bedridden with appendicitis? The Australian painter John Russell introduced the young Matisse to Van Gogh’s work, and the rest is history.

David Hockney

Like Van Gogh, David Hockney is enamored with nature. Upon looking at some of Hockney’s work, you may notice its similarities to the late French painter’s pieces. This is noticeable in the brush strokes, subject matter, and color choices. “Well, sometimes I’ll steal something from Van Gogh,” Hockney said in 2018. “I mean, I do. Good artists don’t borrow; they steal.”

Andre Derain

Andre Derain was also taken by Van Gogh’s work after seeing it on view at the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune in Paris. Interestingly enough, Derain was a good friend of Henri Matisse, who also drew inspiration from the great French painter.
