7 Classic Jacket Styles Every Woman Should Own

Outerwear is among the most underrated clothing categories. A coat or jacket adds something to your final look beyond warmth (though, in the cold-weather months, that perk is certainly a plus); it’s an added layer of expression and style. Oftentimes when people think of “outerwear” visions of bulky overcoats to better endure winter weather conditions come to mind, but there’s an entire category of women’s jackets that deserve a spot in your capsule wardrobe.

A Denim Jacket

Denim jackets are the “it” jackets of spring and cool summer nights, but you can also get a decent amount of wear out of them in early autumn. While lighter washes are regarded as casual, dark washes can pass as dressy. Still, because of their effortlessly cool aesthetic, fashion stylist and journalist Corina Gaffrey says denim jackets pair well with dressy items that play with contrasts, like sequins and frills, so experimentation is encouraged.

A Puffer Jacket

Puffer jackets are most commonly broken out towards the end of fall and the beginning of winter when temperatures drop, and you need something heavier than a sweater or cardigan to keep you warm. Some are stuffed with down, but most are constructed from synthetic insulation. While they come in all different lengths, Gaffey argues styles that hit the top of the hip are the most versatile. “Over gym gear, with jeans, the casual topper works well for a layer of insulation but the street style set takes their puffers further into the fashion realm, teaming it with everything from maxi dresses to co-ords, crop tops, and skirts.”

A Leather Jacket

Need an element of edge? Leather jackets add an instant cool factor to any ensemble. Authentic materials tend to be pricy, but you can find faux leather alternatives that are budget-friendly (not to mention cruelty-free and better for the environment). Leather jackets also come in a myriad of lengths, from cropped to waist-length, hip-length, and full-length, styles like bombers, motos, and blazers, and every color you can think of.

Shearling-lined designs can be great options for warmer winter afternoons, but the jacket is most popularly worn in early spring and throughout the fall season.

A Blazer

Though a popular pick for work settings, this women’s jacket is not exclusive to the office, nor is the style as stiff as it was once assumed to be, thanks to more street-smart designs. There are cropped blazers and thigh-length suit jackets, tailored styles, and oversized options. They come in a range of colors and patterns, and some come with embellishments, like rhinestone hems and feathered cuffs. 

A Cape

Erase the visions of poncho-like garments out of your mind; the modern cape is chic and cool and you’re going to want to add one to your outerwear wardrobe ASAP. Similar to suit jackets, grabbing a cape as you head out the door can add an element of sophistication to your look, but it can also add an element of cozy, depending on its style. There are tailored capes structured to mimic a blazer, sans traditional sleeves, and there are knit variations that add an element of warmth. 

A Bomber Jacket

Bomber jackets are what Gaffey calls a “trans-seasonal” item, meaning they can stay in your closet and get plenty of wear year-round. Bomber jackets are a sporty style; the fashion piece was inspired by the athlete’s off-duty uniform. Traditionally, the jacket hits at the hips or waist and features a tight waistband and cuffs. They run roomy and are a great layering women’s jacket for the fall and winter months. As for how to style, Gaffey says the limit does not exist: “Often crafted in silk or satin, try teaming a bomber jacket with a sleek dress, denim jeans, or leather trousers, but honestly, there isn't an outfit that the sporty layer doesn't make look cool and work with.”

A Trench

Last but not least, a trench coat is essential in a women’s jacket capsule wardrobe. Trench coats are most popular in the spring, but the jacket is a season-less staple that can be another excellent layering item. When people think of trench coats, yes, they think of detectives, but they think of sophistication (and likely Burberry as its signature trench is famous). A neutral-toned trench can work with any outfit; it adds to a formal fit and elevates a more casual ensemble.
