5 Ways to Give Your Skin a Fresh Workout

From Men's Health

When we talk about ‘strong’ skin, we’re really talking about is collagen, the body’s main structural protein. “It gives skin its elasticity and strength,” says dermatologist Ife Rodney. But levels start to decline in our twenties, leading to signs of ageing and dull complexions. To combat this, you need to slow down this loss and speed up the production of new collagen. Consider the following routine as a protein shake for your face.

1. Peptides

Collagen, which makes up about 75% of the dry weight of your skin, is a protein made up of amino acids called peptides. “Instead of replacing collagen, you can replace the peptides, which can stimulate your body to make more collagen,” says Rodney. It’s like fortifying a brick wall with new mortar rather than bricks.

How to use it: Apply a peptide-rich eye cream to help reduce the effect of crow’s feet and bags.

2. Hyaluronic Acid

This naturally occurring acid won’t create more collagen but can make what you have firmer. “It’s a carbohydrate that supports the collagen and elastic fibres in the skin,” says Rodney. Plus, it helps skin stay hydrated by holding a thousand times its molecular weight in water.

How to use it: Choose a moisturiser that contains it and apply it before bed.

Antioxidants

Free radicals from UV rays and pollution can accelerate the breakdown of collagen. Antioxidants such as vitamin C help to clear out the free radicals and protect collagen from damage. Niacinamide, a B vitamin that acts as an antioxidant, also works to rebuild damaged cells

How to use it: Rodney recommends applying a vitamin C serum every morning.

Try this:

4. Retinol

Vitamin A, also known as retinol, stimulates cell turnover and collagen production, both of which can iron out fine lines and discoloration. It can help other skincare ingredients work better by increasing the permeability of your skin, says dermatologist Joe McGowan.

How to use it: Retinol can make skin sensitive to sunlight, so use it only at night on a clean face.

5. Sunscreen

By using sunscreen, you minimise the harmful effects of UV rays, which create collagen-blasting free radicals, says Rodney. Not to mention you’re reducing the risk of skin cancer.

How to use it: Choose a sunscreen that blends easily on your skin and apply it after a moisturiser.
