5 Things All Trendy Living Rooms Will Have in 2025, According to Designers
Living room decor sometimes doesn’t get the style attention it deserves — especially compared to more functional spots like the kitchen or bathroom. Thankfully, though, if you’re itching for a home design refresh this year, focusing on your living room’s look doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, this can be the space that best reflects your personality in one cozy atmosphere.
“In 2025, design will be all about storytelling,” says designer Isy Runsewe. “Every detail, whether it’s the color of a throw pillow or the curve of a coffee table, will contribute to a narrative that tells a story about you.”
As designers look ahead to the next 12 months, that sentiment feels especially true of the living room, as it’s often the epicenter of a home. “People are prioritizing spaces that feel functional and inspiring: a place to entertain, unwind, and express their personality,” Runsewe notes. To give your living room some much-needed love, consider these five trendy-yet-timeless elements three designers suggest you prioritize in 2025.
Nature-Inspired Paint Colors
One of the easiest and most effective ways to create an inviting vibe in your living room is with a fresh can of paint, and Runsewe sees a future of noticeable natural tones as the best living room color for 2025. “Expect warmer, earthy ones like terracotta, ochre, and dusty rose to take center stage, balanced by grounding deep greens and blues,” she says. “These colors feel like a desire for comfort and connection with nature.”
Unexpected Finishes
For those who prefer to go more flashy than natural, designer Kyle Dutton wouldn’t be surprised if a different paint application took off. “I predict lacquered ceilings in whites and blues,” he says. A shiny ceiling would definitely help bounce light around with ease, or this can double as a continuation of your wall paint for a full color-drenched effect.
A Continuation of Curves
In the realm of furniture, designer Kim Gordon says curved accents will continue to be popular in 2025, and Runsewe agrees. “I see a rise in softer silhouettes, such as curved sofas, arched bookcases, and barrel-backed chairs,” Runsewe adds. “These shapes evoke a sense of coziness while maintaining a chic edge.”
To distinguish these rounded edges for the new year, Runsewe supports a few specific fabrics coming into play. “We’ll get used to more unexpected materials like raw silks, embroidered linens, and sustainable but high-performance options,” she notes.
Daring Pattern Play
As living rooms embrace more color, Dutton says increased interest in pattern mixing will likely also follow suit. In particular, he predicts geometric shapes will be big next year alongside classic natural motifs. “We see a lot of botanical and floral wallpapers, from repeating patterns to beautiful landscape murals,” he says. You can mix and match various prints across pillows and curtains for a maximalist effect that’s still relatively small-scale, too.
Decorative Lighting
In terms of accessories, designers also expect more statement lighting to dominate living rooms in 2025. “Sculptural lighting fixtures will steal the show — especially in materials like glass, brass, and natural stone,” Runsewe adds. “Lamps with bold, artistic shapes will be used as focal points, adding depth and dimension even when they’re off.”
