This $40 Million L.A. Mansion Has a Funicular and a Hillside Glamping Spot
The Brentwood area on L.A.’s Westside is known for its leafy neighborhoods, swanky country clubs, cute boutiques, and tasty restaurants, as well as its slew of A-list residents. Tucked onto an up-sloped 1.2-acre parcel along Brentridge Drive, just north of The Getty, this $40 million modernist-inspired estate is an eye-catching addition to the quiet enclave and suitable perhaps for a superstar with a taste for something serious but out of the ordinary.
The home was designed by AD100 designers Ramin and Pamela Shamshiri of Studio Shamshiri, an L.A.-based firm known for their layered, bohemian aesthetic that’s rich in colors and textures. The home spans almost 12,600 square feet with eight bedrooms and nine full bathrooms, plus a couple of two powder rooms. Backed by a hillside etched with tiered gardens bursting with lush foliage, mature trees, and native shrubs, the serene oasis hides behind a sculpted, multi-level facade made from board-formed concrete with geometrical steel-frame windows and openings.

The residence is fronted by a sculptural porte-cochère, and upon entering, there is a circular oculus that floods the space with natural light. The castle-esque interiors feature gray hand-troweled plaster walls, bronze finishes, limestone floors, plus a double-height foyer with a dramatic staircase.
Interior spaces have a constant interplay of shadows and light thanks to the strategic placement of windows. The main living room has 20-foot-high ceilings with near floor-to-ceiling arched windows overlooking the terraced gardens. A monolithic concrete fireplace adds to the playful use of scale, as do the room’s specially commissioned artworks.
Even the eat-in kitchen feels like a work of art, with custom millwork that conceals storage areas and state-of-the-art appliances, along with a shimmering tile backsplash. There’s also a nearby wine storage vault and professional-grade bar, while the banquet hall-sized dining room has a minimalistic fireplace.
Up the staircase that makes a flying curve over the foyer, there’s a study and lounge that opens to a rooftop terrace with an outdoor fireplace and panoramic views of Brentwood. The primary bedroom features high ceilings, museum-quality art lighting, and a seating area, while the bathroom is, no joke, akin to a five-star boutique spa with a chaise lounge alongside a massive bathtub set below a half-moon-shaped window filled with a relaxing view of the surrounding treetops. In a separate area, a skylight fills the large shower with light. Several of the other bedrooms also have skylights and views of the grounds, as well as spacious closets and private bathrooms finished with rare stones and custom metalwork that give each their own subtle feel.
Outside, the pool is surrounded by patios and loungers, along with an alfresco dining area. But, as nice as all that is, the most unusual aspect of the home is hands down the private funicular that chugs up the hillside to a sun-splashed plateau and two luxury yurts with water and power overlooking Los Angeles. There’s also a six-car garage connected to the residence via an underground tunnel.
