As retirement approaches, priorities and goals shift, prompting many to relocate to be closer to family, enjoy a different climate or find a place where a fixed income is stretched further. With inflation still a problem and prices expected to rise again this year, as finance expert Jaspreet Singh said in a YouTube video, retirees are likely to move to a cheaper area.

While Florida is the top state for retirees, according to recent data from The Motley Fool, there are plenty of affordable, charming East Coast options for seniors who prefer cities over sandy beaches.

“As a realtor based in Los Angeles, I’ve had the pleasure of helping clients find their dream homes all over the country and some of them have made the leap to the East Coast for retirement,” explained Yawar Charlie, director of estates at Christie’s International Real Estate of Southern California. “Here are four cities my clients have moved to — and loved — when it was time to embrace their golden years.”

Curious about other options? Here are even more affordable cities to retire on the East Coast.

Charleston, South Carolina

Located approximately two hours from Columbus, the state’s capital, Charleston possesses a historic charm with its Civil War-era striking mansions and cobblestone streets. It’s a stunning city with world-class dining and reasonable prices.

“This historic city is a retiree’s dream, offering a slower pace of life with plenty to keep you entertained,” Charlie said. The median home price hovers around $350,000 or less for a two-bedroom home, per Rocket Homes, which is a steal for such a beautiful and culturally-rich location.

“Charleston also boasts a mild climate so you can enjoy the outdoors year-round. Several clients who’ve retired here rave about the welcoming community and abundance of activities, from strolling the Battery to boating on the Ashley River,” he added.

Asheville, North Carolina

Known for its thriving arts scene, upscale restaurants and stunning landscapes, Asheville is getting a lot of attention.

“Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is ideal for retirees who want natural beauty and vibrant culture,” Charlie explained. “With a median home price of approximately $470,000, per Zillow, it’s an affordable option compared to larger cities.

“Several clients who’ve made the move to Asheville tell me they love its mix of small-town charm and big-city amenities. It’s perfect for retirees who want to stay active and inspired,” he added.

Annapolis, Maryland

With its 18th-century brick houses, countless Instagram-worthy spots and impressive food scene, Annapolis has so much to offer.

“If you’re a fan of waterfront living and maritime culture, Annapolis is calling your name. Known as the ‘Sailing Capital of the U.S.,’ this charming city offers retirees a lifestyle filled with beautiful views, walkable streets and plenty of seafood,” Charlie explained.

“The median home price is around $535,000, which reflects its prime location near Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. Retirees appreciate Annapolis’s historic charm, excellent healthcare options and proximity to family-friendly activities, making it a great spot for visiting grandkids,” he said.

Savannah, Georgia

Known for its significant historical sites and walkable riverfront packed with bars, shops and restaurants, Savannah is a unique city incomparable to anywhere else.

“Savannah is like stepping into another era with its stunning architecture, moss-draped oak trees and vibrant city squares,” Charlie said. “It’s one of the most affordable East Coast cities on this list, with a median home price of $321,000.

“Beyond its beauty, Savannah is a retiree-friendly city with a strong sense of community, mild winters and a thriving arts and cultural scene,” he added. “Several of my clients who’ve retired here love its slower pace and the joy of being able to sit on their porch with sweet tea in hand.”

For retirees considering the East Coast, there are budget-friendly cities that offer exciting new adventures that won’t break the bank.

“Retirement is your time to live life your way and these cities are proof that you don’t have to compromise,” Charlie explained. “Take it from my clients who’ve taken the plunge — when you find the right spot, it’s like the next chapter of your life writes itself.”
