This $4.3 Million Desert Retreat in SoCal Was Inspired by 2 of Mexico’s Most Celebrated Architects
Ready to step outside the box? An early 1990s-built residence in the southern California desert city of Rancho Mirage just listed with geometric forms and vibrant color-stained walls. The low-slung pad sits along the manicured greens of the Tamarisk Country Club, where late stars Lucille Ball and Frank Sinatra played rounds as members. Jeff Kohl of The Agency holds the $4.29 million listing.
Overlooking the club’s 15th fairway, the La Paz Road residence is inspired by the designs of award-winning Mexican architects Ricardo Legorreta and Luis Barragán. Fans of their work know color was a vital element in their designs, which range from the Children’s Discovery Museum in San Jose to Caudra San Cristóbal on the outskirts of Mexico City, the latter opening to the public this year as a cultural center for art and architecture. And, here in Rancho Mirage, the duo’s captivating sense of color and linear proportions is honored via the desert oasis.

Swaying palm trees and jaw-dropping mountain views rise above the flat roof of the crisp white stucco exterior. A patinated copper door leads into a walled and landscaped courtyard encased by geometric terracotta- and purple-hued walls that stand out among dusty pink terracing and a velvety patch of lawn. A tiled waterfall and lengthy pool are other key features.
A rustic wooden wall, exposed beams, and a creamy beige hue trailing the foyer evoke the warm, inviting feel of classic desert modernism. Further in, a vaulted ceiling soars above the main living area with a minimalist fireplace, built-in display niches, and a curvilinear custom bar. The formal dining room is capped by a skylight, while the large center island kitchen and the adjoining breakfast nook are great places to catch up during casual meals.
The dark stone tile floors throughout the home’s common spaces flow into the light-filled primary bedroom, where a second fireplace stands between a pair of sliding glass doors that frame golf course views. The ensuite bathroom has a built-in dresser opposite the tiled vanity and a row of linear windows set into a wall of lilac tiles behind a soaking tub lined with maroon-colored tiles. One of the home’s two other bedrooms is situated in a private guest wing with its own steam shower-equipped bathroom.
In addition to the spacious courtyard, where the sun can be seen setting behind the mountains that rise to the west of Rancho Mirage, the north side of the house spills onto a covered terrace that bows out into a lush, grassy yard that backs up to the golf course.
Although Rancho Mirage’s housing market isn’t competitive as the last few years, the Coachella Valley community continues to tote some of the best architectural eye candy. For example, earlier this month, a striking residence refurbished by architect Robert Stone was hoisted onto the market for $7.5 million.
