The 25 Boutique B&B in Torquay named the best in the world by TripAdvisor

Based on the exploits of Basil Fawlty and his hapless hotel staff, you would be forgiven for not holding guest accommodation in Torquay in the highest esteem.

And yet The 25 Boutique B&B has now put the eyes of the world on the seaside town for entirely positive reasons.

Travel review website TripAdvisor announced the winners of its Travellers' Choice awards on Wednesday morning, which saw the five-star accommodation in the English Riviera named the very best B&B on the planet.

Based on hundreds of positive reviews, visitors have been left most impressed by its sizeable, modern and clean rooms, the hospitality of the owners, and - most excitingly - its excellent homemade biscuits.

The similarly freshly made breakfasts on offer were described by one guest as "wonderful", and presumably were not served up by a hapless Spanish waiter.

Andy and Julian Banner-Price, who run the business, said: "We were absolutely thrilled to hear that The 25 has been named as the best B&B in the world.

"We love creating special and memorable experiences for our guests and receiving their excellent reviews makes our hard work truly rewarding."

The 25 is not alone in flying the flag for the UK in the annual list of the best B&Bs.

Bindon Bottom B&B in West Lulworth, Dorset, placed third; The Grange in Fylingthorpe, North Yorkshire, placed fourth, and Swallows Rest in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, took fifth spot.

Also in the top 10 was Hillstone Lodge in Colbost on the Isle of Skye, which came seventh.

TripAdvisor spokeswoman Hayley Coleman said the fab five had helped uphold the proud reputation of the B&B as being "a British institution".

She added that "it's great to see the UK recognised worldwide for doing the B&B best".
