Brexit supporters thwarted by well-made EU flag that just wouldn't burn
At the stroke of midnight European Union officials in Brussels lowered the Union Flag for the last time with all the respect and reverence this historic moment commanded.
In Britain by contrast, Brexit supporters who had gathered in London, failed to show the same magnanimity and dignity as they tried to burn an EU flag.
Among the group to gather in Parliament Square, several Brexiteers attempted to set light to the 12 stared-flag in a final act of defiance.
However, their actions were ironically thwarted by European safety standards, as the flag refused to burn.
Celebrations across Britain were largely muted, only the most ardent Brexiteers felt the need to pop the champagne corks while arch Remainers held solemn vigils and protests.
Protests were most vocal in Scotland and Northern Ireland, underscoring that Britain as it leaves the EU remains bitterly divided; with the future of the United Kingdom looking more precarious than at any point in the country's modern history.
