Gran, 82, fights off shop raider with walking stick

An 82-year-old grandmother fought off robber at the newsagents shop she owns - by beating him with her walking stick.

The raider, wrapped in a blue sleeping bag, burst into Hanley's AJ and J Newsagents in Stoke-on-Trent and demanded cash.

CCTV footage captured brave June Turner hitting the man with the stick she uses to get around since breaking her hip three years ago.

He fled with £50 and six packets of cigarettes after barging her to the ground and leaving her with a black eye.

'I could only see his eyes'

One of her regular customers helped her up after the incident in Hanley, early on September 3.

June told StokeonTrentLive: "He came in with this blanket around him and I could only see his eyes. He came up to the counter and said 'I want your money' but I said 'you're not having my money' and with that he came round the back of the counter and got some money from the till.

"I saw him with a £20 note in his hand and then I couldn't find the panic button so I got my stick and I really belted him with it but I thought to myself I wish I had my wooden stick because then I would have knocked him out. I went hell for leather on him.

'He rushed out like the clappers'

"Then he opened the fags and they were all on the floor. He pushed me to the floor and I was worried in case of breaking my hip as I had a replacement a few years ago and I didn't want to go through that again.

"And then he rushed out like the clappers."

Staffordshire Police are appealing for information.
