A YouTube adventurer has released a video of the moment he picked up a giant 10lb sea slug.

Coyote Peterson, who has a YouTube channel called Brave Wilderness, shared footage of him holding the enormous black slug, which he found in a coastal tide pool in California.

Coyote can be seen looking for giant slugs with his expert friend, known only as Aaron.

When Aaron spots one, Coyote runs over and exclaims: "Oh my gosh, look at the size of that thing. Wow, dude."

He then asks if it's safe to pick up, before getting his hands on it. He says: "It is heavy, jeez this thing must be about 10lbs."

He asks Aaron: "Is that a big one?", and he replies: "It's a pretty good size, yeah, it's one of the bigger ones I've seen."

Coyote says: "Oh my gosh it is so slimy."

Explaining a little more about the slug, Aaron says: "Well, what he's wrapping around your arm right now is actually his muscular foot, he uses that to get around."

The creature is actually called a California black sea hare and is the largest known species of sea slug.

They live in the northeast Pacific off California and Baja California, Mexico, including the Gulf of California.

The black sea hare can grow to be very large: the longest recorded specimen measured 99cm (39in) when crawling (and thus fully extended), and weighed nearly 14kg (31lb).

It eats brown seaweeds and kelp, which give the animal its typically very dark colouring.
