Holidays in Rome are on the rise thanks to new James Bond film Spectre, which broke box office records on its first day. According to travel agencies, there has been a surge in the number of British travellers booking holidays in Spectre locations, particularly the Italian capital.

In the movie, the Tiber River, the Colosseum and the streets of the Vatican City are seen in the high-speed car chase scene. Filming took place at the 15th century Ponte Sisto footbridge, in cobblestone alleys around the Piazza Navona, close to Vatican City and at the Museo Della Civilta Romana (Museum of Roman Civilisation).

To celebrate the Eternal City as the hottest new film location, we've picked three of the best Spectre-inspired holidays in Rome...

For a slice of Hollywood glamour, book a stay at the Rome Cavalieri hotel. Its restaurant, La Pergola, is one of the best in Italy, with three Michelin stars, an extensive wine cellar containing an impressive 60,000 bottles, and some of the best views of the Italian capital. Citalia offers a three-night break at the five-star hotel from £489 per person on a B&B basis – saving up to £192 per couple. The package includes return flights from London Gatwick with Easyjet, based on a 29 January departure.

While a Bond film isn't complete without a car chase, exploring Italy's capital is generally recommended at a more leisurely pace. To visit Rome's historic sites without the risk of arrest, enjoy a short break with Western & Oriental from £425 per person, where you will spend three nights at the four-star Hotel Leon's Place on a B&B basis. Formerly the home of an Italian aristocrat, the hotel will inject a slice of Bond glamour into your Rome city break and is within walking distance of the filming locations. The holiday includes return flights from the UK.

The dramatic high-speed car chase scene along the Tiber River features Bond's brand-new silver Aston Martin DB10 and promises arresting views of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. You can stay nearby at Hotel De Russie, a luxurious 19th century Rocco Forte hotel which regularly hosts royalty and renowned artists. DialAFlight offers 25 per cent savings at De Russie Hotel in March. The holiday costs from £689 per person, based on two sharing, including three nights' accommodation with breakfast and flights from Gatwick between 1 and 21 March.
