Iran is preparing for a "tsunami" of foreign tourists as Western countries lift sanctions in return for curbs on its nuclear program.

The country is home to ancient sites, fascinating cities and magnificent Islamic architecture.

Masoud Soltanifar, Iran's vice president and the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization chief, told the Associated Press: "In the post-sanctions era, tourism is an industry that will get a boost more than any other sector.

"Tourism is certainly the driving engine to get Iran's economy out of recession. Iran's tourism sector is a flourishing market for investors. We are anticipating a tsunami of tourists after sanctions are lifted."

According to the Independent, Iran aims to welcome 20 million tourists by 2025.

It is set to announce new projects to attract foreign investment over the coming days.

The country has suffered a sharp decline in tourism in the years of Western sanctions.

Soltanifar said officials are working to remove obstacles for tourists and issue visas on arrival at Tehran's airport for travellers from 190 countries.

Americans and Brits will need a visa before travelling to Iran.
