Are you looking for a cheap holiday? Then you need to head to Bulgaria - because it's the best for bargain-hunting British holidaymakers thanks to plunging in-resort prices, according to a new survey.

And the strengthening of the pound against the euro is making the PortugueseAlgarveand Spain's Costa del Sol good value for money for UK travellers too, the survey by Post Office Travel Money found.

Prices of 10 typical holiday items, including a two-course lunch for two and a three-course evening meal for two plus wine, were assessed in 14 European resorts. WORDS: PA.

The items were cheapest, at just £37, in Sunny Beach in Bulgaria, with the Algarve (£44) the next-best value-for-money destination followed by Spain's Costa del Sol (£48).

In contrast, the priciest resort was Sorrento in Italy where the items cost as much as £102. Ibiza (£96) and Nice in France (£86) were also among the most costly destinations.

Comparing in-resort prices now with a year ago, the biggest dip in costs was in the Algarve (down 22%), followed by Marmaris in Turkey (down 21.4%).

An evening meal out for two at a tourist-class restaurant in the Algarve currently costs just £16.42 but is as much as £52.24 in Sorrento.

A glass of wine at a bar costs just £1.12 in the Algarve but can set tourists back £2.99 in Nice.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money said: "Meal prices can have a big impact on the holiday budget and make a big dent in their holiday finances for people who plan to eat out every night.

"The best advice is to do some homework in advance and be aware of what to expect before facing the bill."
