Eiffel Tower named most 'selfied' attraction
The Eiffel Tower in Paris has been named as the most 'selfied' attraction in the world.
AttractionTix.com analysed more than 200 million Instagram photos using the tag 'selfie' as a search filter.
Dubai's Burj Khalifa and Florida's Disney World just missed out on the top spots, coming in as runners up.
Other European attractions to make it into the top ten were London's Big Ben and London Bridge, Barcelona's Sagrada Familia, The Colosseum and Disneyland Paris.
Like London, New York also charted twice in the top ten with two well-known attractions: The Empire State Building and Top of the Rock at the Rockefeller Center. Surprisingly one of New York's most famous landmarks, the Statue of Liberty, didn't make the top ten, ending up at 17.
Other internationally iconic attractions not to make the top ten were Sydney's Opera House, the Vatican and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
While millions of selfies are taken every day, some American attractions have banned the newest photographic aid: camera extension devices, 'selfie sticks'. The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum don't allow visitors to use them because of safety issues, The Telegraph reports.
"Like tripods and monopods, the use of selfie sticks is prohibited at the Hirshhorn to preserve the safety of the artwork and the visitors who come to enjoy it," Hirshhorn Museum spokeswoman Kelly Carnes told the Washington Post.
Uncertified selfie sticks were also banned by the government in South Korea last year. The Independent reports that The Ministry of Science called for the ban, claiming that the unauthorised devices Bluetooth services may result in other electronic equipment malfunctioning.
Simon Applebaum, Consumer Marketing Director at AttractTix said: "Selfies have not only become acceptable, but the standard thing to do nowadays when at an attraction, so it's only natural that people are taking selfies of themselves when travelling around the world, and then sharing them on social media"
