A man and his dog were charged by a three-metre crocodile while walking along a beach in Darwin, Australia.

Ivan Waterson, 56, was walking with his border collie, named Friday, at Rapid Creek beach in Darwin's suburbs at around 7pm when the tide was high on Sunday night.

According to abc.net.au, he said the crocodile came "straight at us", adding: "Sure enough you could see the eyes coming at us - it was moving pretty fast," he said.

"I decided to hightail it out of there with the dog."

Ivan said people on the other side of the beach were screaming at him to get the dog out.

It is the second time he has been charged by a crocodile at Rapid Creek, and said there is one or two croc sightings a year reported at the beach.

The head of Darwin's Problem Crocodile Management team, Tom Nichols, said a ranger received a call about the incident, and then saw a three-metre crocodile at Rapid Creek that night.

He said the team had caught three crocodiles in Darwin Harbour and its waterways in the last week.

Speaking to Yahoo, he said: "Most of the crocs come around and go into Darwin harbour and disperse into the estuaries, but some take a while to get in there.

"They're attracted by bait fish or just inquisitive. People have to be croc-wise and realise it is croc habitat up here.

"As you're walking along the beach don't go real close to the water, and keep your eyes open.

"Crocs are attracted to dogs. They certainly like them."
