Surprise! Welsh pub voted third best beach bar in the world
Never mind the Maldives or the French Riviera, a humble pub in Wales has been voted the third best beach bar in the world.
The Ty Coch Inn, located in Porthdinllaen on the North Wales coast, overlooks the Irish Sea and beat off a host of rivals from tropical and glitzy hotspots.
It was pipped to the top spot by the Pelican Bar in Negril, Jamaica, and Badeschiff, in Berlin, in the list compiled by cheapflights.co.uk.
And it wasn't the only UK pub to make the list; The Watering Hole on Perranporth Beach in Cornwall made it in at seventh place.
Cheapflights spokesman, Ben Rosier, told Aol Travel: "The results from the Cheapflights top ten best beach bar analysis are in – and who'd have thought that beach drinking spots in Cornwall and Wales would take on glitzy sun-drenched rivals, in Brazil, Ibiza, Florida and the South of France, and win?
"Our experts looked at a host of criteria including 'vibe', 'location' and 'individuality'. 'Weather' may have been somewhat down the list of criteria our experts used – but there's always a drink if you're waiting for the weather to cheer up, and with sunshine predicted for the next couple of weeks, now may be a great opportunity to get out and see why Ty Coch made the list."
Built in 1823, Ty Coch started life as a vicarage before it was opened as an inn in 1842 to feed the hungry (and thirsty) shipbuilders who worked on the beach.
The Inn has a prime location on the sweeping Welsh seaside, with views across to Yr Eifl and Snowdonia.
Porthdinllaen is a small coastal village on the Llŷn Peninsula and has been owned by the National Trust since 1994. There are only about two dozen buildings in Porthdinllaen, with Ty Coch at the centre of the village.
Only locals have vehicle access to the Inn, so visitors must walk across the beach from Morfa Nefyn or across the golf course on top of the headland to reach Ty Coch.
