A New York couple, who were visiting New Orleans, were arrested yesterday after a shooting.

According to The Times Picayune, the man, who has been named as Kevin Cahill, 29, tried to kill a 49-year-old Florida man by shooting him several times in the chest and stomach.

The incident took place at around 9am in a hotel room at the Wyndham Garden Plaza Hotel, in New Orleans' Central Business District. He also accidentally shot his girlfriend, Sar Mott, 27, in the foot.

The couple tried to flee the hotel after the incident, but were quickly stopped by police. Drugs and a handgun were later recovered from the scene.

New Orleans Police Department confirmed that Ms Mott and the Florida man were taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

WWLTV reports that the incident occurred after Cahill got involved in an argument with the Florida man, and pulled a gun. Mr Cahill will now be booked with attempted murder, aggravated battery, principal to narcotics and felon with a firearm. Ms Mott will be booked with second-degree battery when she is released from hospital.

A woman who was staying in the next room told Nola.com that she called police when she heard three shots ring out.

Jacqueline Rivers said: "I wasn't sure it was gunshots until I heard a man say, 'Someone help! I've been shot.'" She said that she also heard a woman crying.
