A plane had to be sealed off and disinfected after a passenger was stung by a scorpion mid-flight.

The Iberia airlines Airbus 340 from Costa Rica to Spain had to be sealed off upon landing at Madrid's Barajas International Airport, according to dnaindia.com.

Upon arrival, Barajas doctors confirmed the sting on the passenger's left arm, and she was taken to hospital in the Spanish capital.

The incident took place on Thursday 22 November on board flight 6316. The passenger was on a flight from San Jose to Madrid with another five people, who were all making their way to Zurich.

One member of the group remained in Madrid to accompany the woman to hospital, where she was held under observation before being released on Tuesday 27 November.

It's not the first time a stowaway scorpion has caused panic on a plane; back in July, an air passenger described how he feared for his life on a flight between Seattle and Alaska when he found a scorpion stinging him on his arm.

Jeff Ellis, 55, said he had dozed off about three hours into the flight when he awoke to something tickling his arm.

"I felt it on my shirt sleeve and brushed it off - I thought it was a little spider or something," Mr Ellis said. "Then I felt it back on my elbow."

He described how he grabbed it with a napkin and girlfriend Suzanne Foster called a flight attendant over, who tossed the scorpion into a clear plastic bag, terrifying children who were sitting nearby.
