A man is facing charges after launching into an expletive-ridden tirade against the woman in front of him because she would not turn off her reading light.

The 50-year-old man, who was on an Alaska Airlines flight from Honolulu to Bellingham International Airport in Washington, asked the woman to turn off her overhead light.

When she refused, he complained to cabin crew, who explained that the woman had every right keep it on.

According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary, that set off the rant.

He said the man began shouting expletives and threatened to keep kicking the back of her chair is she didn't turn off the light, reports the Bellingham Herald.

State Trooper Leary and five sheriff's deputies were waiting to question the man when he arrived at Bellingham Airport.

After being spoken to by officers, the man, who had been travelling with his son and daughter, was allowed to go home.

Leary said he was "not a flight risk", but that he may face charges for causing disruption on a plane.
