Forest fires in Portugal threatening holiday resorts

Forest fires raging in Funchal, the capital of the Portuguese island of Madeira, have been threatening the area's hotels, resorts, houses and schools, according to the Independent.
The fires began on Wednesday, and Porto Santo, a smaller island near Madeira, is the latest to see people evacuating their homes, reports the BBC.
High winds are thought to be inhibiting efforts to quash the flames on both islands.

Over 75 firefighters have gone over from the Portuguese mainland to help the local services.
But fires have also broken out on the mainland, with authorities attempting to stamp out flames near the town of Tavira in the Algarve.

Meanwhile, over in the popular holiday island of Tenerife, over 2,000 people have been evacuated from the town of Vilafor to escape raging wildfires, according to the Mirror.
The fires went perilously close to the edge of the Teide National Park, a famous beauty spot surrounding the Teide volcano - Spain's highest peak and a Unesco world heritage site.
Holiday coaches and tourists' cars were evacuated from the grounds of the park as a precaution.
At the beginning of July, more than three thousand people were evacuated from one of Spain's most popular holiday areas as two forest fires wreaked havoc.
Around 50,000 hectares of land around Valencia on the east coast were destroyed in what are already being labelled as the worst forest fires in more than 20 years.
