Hong Kong has been named the best city in the world to live in a new index that focuses on green space.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) looks at global "liveability" rankings and criteria that examines "spatial characteristics", like urban sprawl, connection and proximity to other cities, and pollution.

Amsterdam came in at number two, followed by Osaka, Paris and Sydney.

Not one city from the UK made it into the top 10 out of the 140 city rankings.

The top ten list was made up of five cities from Europe, three from Asia, one from North America, and one from Australia.

According to the news.com.au, the report said: "Hong Kong is a very compact city that has managed to maintain its natural heritage, create a dense network of green spaces and enjoy extensive links to the rest of the world,"

The lowest-scoring city on the index was Tehran, followed by Nairobi and Lusaka.

The top 10 cities on the EIU Liveabilit index 2012 are:

1. Hong Kong
2. Amsterdam
3. Osaka
4. Paris
