A Boeing 747 passenger plane appeared far too close for comfort to a tiny light aircraft this week - and it was all caught on camera.

The jaw-dropping sequence of pictures show the passenger jet looming large over the Cessna 172N Skyhawk.

Joel Thomas captured the scene over Archerfield Airport, located in the suburbs of Brisbane.

According to Rex Features, he said: "I first spotted the Boeing 747 on a plane tracking website, and as the weather had finally cleared up, I decided to get my camera ready to try and get a photo of it passing overhead.

"About 10 minutes later, I was in the backyard with the camera ready. I then heard the rumble of the 747s engines, and I could also hear the sound of a light aircraft in the same direction, however I didn't consider this to be of any importance.

"As the Qantas 747 came into view, so did a small Cessna, which then proceeded in 'overtaking' the mighty 747 as the two appeared to fly in formation above my head. I was staggered.

"Not only had I been in the right place at the right time, but I had my camera ready to capture the event. What made it more amazing, was the fact that the day before, and now the day after, had both been horrible and cloudy.

"So through a series of very lucky events, and plenty of luck, I managed to capture a rare moment, that most people would never see, let alone capture on camera."

He says the Cessna was performing a training flight, doing circuits at 1000 feet, while the jet was approximately at 3000ft, meaning in reality there was no real danger.

Trevor Potter, pilot of the Cessna, says: "We saw the shadow of the B747 passing over the ground under us but had limited visibility upwards."

While Allan Brooks, CEO of the Royal Queensland Aero Club, commented: "The photo was the cause of much conversation around our premises."
