Passengers onboard a Finnair flight from Helsinki to New Delhi were treated to a Bollywood dance routine, performed by cabin crew, to celebrate India's 63rd Republic Day.

The choreographed performance, which took place on January 17, was uploaded to Finnair's YouTube channel on January 26 to mark republic day.

The Daily Mail reports that it has since become a YouTube sensation, receiving more than 540,000 viewings.

The idea was dreamed up by flight attendant Helena Kaarinen, who also coordinated rehearsals and enlisted the help of a former flight attendant friend in Mumbai, who is now a Bollywood teacher.

She uploaded videos of rehearsals and her friend, Manish Gawde, corrected their choreography.

Ms Kaarinen told the New York Times: "It was a good way to show respect."

She explained that she was keen to show Indian passengers that the airline knew something about their culture.
