A pregnant woman is recovering after being attacked by a leopard in India.

The leopard went on the attack on Friday after straying into the largest city in India's northeast Assam state, Guwahati.

Akila Bibi was left with deep wounds to her scalp and arms, and a 20-year-old man was also hurt, according to the Daily Mail.

Both victims are recovering at Guwahati Medical College Hospital, and Akila's unborn child is unharmed.

It is the third leopard attack in as many weeks in the densely populated city, with one man being killed and another partially scalped when a leopard pounced in the same area at the beginning of the year.

Conservationists believe it is because of urban and industrial encroachment into the animals' habitats.

The leopard in this instance was tranquillised by forest officials and moved to the Assam state zoo.
