Billionaire Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been forced to moor his enormous yacht off the coast of Antibes because the only berth big enough has been taken by the Saudi sheikh Prince Aziz al Saud.

The 533ft vessel named Eclipse at Millionare's Quay is moored a few hundred yards offshore in the South of France, a few hundred yards from Abramovich's beachfront chateau.

A spokesman for Antibes International Yacht Club said: "We regrettably had to inform Mr Abramovich's people that we cannot accommodate his yacht. The only space where it could fit is already taken, though there are plans to build another large berth in the coming years."

According to a report in the Sun newspaper, the tycoon applied to Antibes council three years ago to build his own pontoon at the villa but the plans were rejected.

The yacht, which is estimated to cost around £50 million to run annually, has its own missile defence system and a James Bond-style escape submarine, two helipads, a luxury spa, a swimming pool, cinema, a hair salon and sauna.

The 24 cabins for 30 guests are all fitted with bulletproof glass, luxury bathrooms and 6ft-wide TVs.
