The 1800s-Inspired Costco Gem I’m Buying Before It Sells Out

Art prints mounted behind neatly made bed with pink floral bedding in bedroom and writing desk sitting on wall underneath one of two skylights. Small built in storage unit on other side of bed.

January is known for its “white” sales, where towels, sheets, comforters, and duvets can be deeply discounted — the thought being that the new year is a great time for a textile refresh. It’s a department-store tradition that goes back to the late 19th and early 20th century, when linens were largely white (hence the name).

But I’d argue that January is actually a wonderful time to embrace a little bit of color on your bed — especially with vintage-look quilts, the latest new-old bedding trend coming to the fore right now, according to designers. It’s so dull and dreary outside, so a pop of a soothing shade like blue or green can go a long way in making your space feel a little cozier. And you don’t need to find a “white” sale to do this on the cheap, either. Costco’s selling the cutest vintage-inspired three-piece quilt set for just $49.99 for a queen size in stores — and the king comes in at just $59.99.

Packaged up in bundles for ease in shopping, Costco’s Origami Quilt Sets include a pair of shams and a matching quilt (the latter of which is reversible to a coordinating solid shade). That means you get two bed looks for the price of one! Each quilts sports a patchwork motif, composed of patterned pieces of fabric that run the gamut from plaids and ginghams to solids and chambray stripes.

It appears as though a few different designs are available in store, including a white, blue, and gray star design made of diamonds, and a white, gray, green, and tan pinwheel motif made out of triangles. Online, I also see a “prairie” design in a fully gray and white colorway as well as a warm copper and white combo. There’s also a slightly more modern-looking triangle style in gray and tan. It’s worth noting, too, that the bedding is $10 more expensive online than it is in stores.

While the quilts don’t have the character a handmade quilt would, the patterns are definitely rooted in traditional designs. And they have all the fluffiness and warmth you’d come to expect from a contemporary bedding option, making them a great layer for the colder winter months — or the perfect one-and-done for a summertime bed. They’d play nicely with white sheets, or you could try to pull out a color from your choice pattern and match your sheeting back to that.

Want something even cozier that maybe doesn’t have quite the same vintage look? Costco is also selling bouclé comforter sets under the CocoCozy label. At $89.99 for a queen size and $99.99 for a king, they’re a little more of an investment but equally on-trend — especially if you’re more of a modern minimalist. These come in five colors, including a few darker colorways. The bouclé provides a nice hit of texture, too, if you’re more into layering solids versus embracing prints.

Hurry to Costco now — neither of these styles are going to last. My local store only had one CocoCozy bagged comforter set left, but the display for the quilts, which just dropped in store, had more of a healthy supply.
