‘I like to display my favourite things on open shelves and I change the arrangements regularly to keep them fresh,’ says Ella Moore, founder of Ella’s Garden, a plant delivery service based in Manchester. Nowhere in her home is this more evident than in her open-plan kitchen/diner, housed in a light-filled extension at the rear of her Victorian property.

Here, we take a tour of Ella's colourful and characterful kitchen, and share 18 high street buys to help you recreate the look in your own home.

Ella's choice of colour and finishes hint at her love of vintage – retro teals and pinks abound – and there is a noticeable absence of cool tones and stark whites.

‘I am drawn to warm tones and I like using complementary shades, so pairing pinks and oranges with dark greens and blues works for me,’ says Ella. ‘And we searched for warm neutrals as a backdrop rather than crisp whites.’

Engineered wood flooring is a great option if you want warm colours underfoot, and it is a practical choice for a busy kitchen. Note Ella's other wooden accent too, in the clever reeded panelling covering the hood of her cooker.

The furniture in Ella's kitchen feels welcoming and lived-in – nothing is intimidatingly new or pristine – and much like her colour palette, is infused with retro elements.

Some industrial accents like the metal bar stools and ceiling-mounted racks temper the softer pinks and teals in Ella's kitchen, while her dining nook is home to a full-fat mustard yellow accent chair.

A glass fronted cabinet fills a narrow gap between her aluminium french doors – vintage furniture should always be your first port of call if you are furnishing awkward spaces, as they are less likely to adhere to standard sizes.

Ella's kitchen spills over with frothy greenery, ceramic mugs and bowls are stacked on surfaces, and colourful posters are bright against her plaster pink walls. The dining nook has become a spot to display her many treasures and trinkets that she finds in charity shops and vintage stores.

'I don’t see the point in having beautiful things in cupboards – I think it’s displaying your treasures that gives a home real warmth.’
