17 Beard Styles to Bookmark Before Your Next Barber Appointment
Fellas, it’s time to step up your beard game. Whether you’re rocking patchy stubble, a full on Jason Mamoa mane, or something in between, 2025 is all about finding the beard style that makes your face look its best. But here’s the catch: not every style works for every face shape.
Before you grab your beard trimmers or book in with your barber, heed the advice from two grooming experts, who have laid out the top beard styles for 2025 and shared tips on how to choose the perfect style to complement your face shape.
The Experts:
How To Choose the Best Beard Style
Got a round face? You’ll want something that elongates your look – think sharper lines and length. Oval faces? Lucky you – pretty much anything goes (don’t gloat, though). Square-jawed chaps should aim for softer, balanced beards to avoid looking like a block of granite, while heart-shaped faces can benefit from fuller styles to add width to the chin.
As for sticking to trends? Celebrity stylist Larry King, who works with the likes of Jared Leto and David Gandy, says the rugged look isn't going anywhere. 'I also think it's good to fade beards down the neck, as it looks a lot more natural and it can be more flattering, particuarly for older men. You can shape your chin line and hide any unflattering facial shapes that come with age.'
King also reveals the 'tache is back – in a big way: 'We're seeing a strong movement towards the mustache to coincide with the rise of 70s and 80s clothing and sportswear that's coming back into fashion. Think iconic styles seen on the likes of Tom Selleck.'
What Are the Best Beard Styles For a Round Face?
'If you've got a round face, you can square it up with the right beard,' says Walker. The trick, he adds, is to keep the sides of your beard shorter and leave it a bit longer around your jawline.
'This will give your face a more angular look, making your jawline appear squarer instead of rounded. You can also go for a longer beard, which helps elongate the face and make it look less circular. For an extra touch, taper the beard to a point below the chin. This draws attention downward and gives your face a slimmer appearance.'
What Are the Best Beard Styles For a Square Jaw?
A clean, square jawline is the envy of all men. 'Whether you go for a clean shave or something more sculpted like a chin strap or soul patch, you’re in great shape,' says Walker. 'A full beard, stiletto beard, scruffy beard, or even some stubble also work really well with this face shape, giving you plenty of stylish options.'
What Are the Best Beard Styles For a Rectangular Face?
For rectangular faces, the goal is to add some fullness and create a more chiseled look. 'Beard styles that add width, like the hipster beard, work well, as do styles that help define the jawline, like the chinstrap beard. Both are great choices to balance out longer face shapes and give you a sharp, structured look,' says Walker.
What Are the Best Beard Styles For an Oval Face?
'Lucky you!' says Walker. 'You’ve got the face shape that works with just about any style. The key is to avoid pointed beards, like the stiletto, as they can throw off your natural balance. Other than that, feel free to experiment with different looks.'
What Is the Best-Looking Beard For Older Men?
The best-looking beard for any man, regardless of age, is one that’s well-groomed and suits the face shape. Ultimately, the best beard is one that complements your personal style while keeping things clean and well-maintained.
