This $16.5 Million Connecticut Estate Has a Basketball Court in the Attic

House-hunting sports enthusiasts should take note of this playful property near the New York-Connecticut border. Set on over 10 acres in Greenwich’s gated Conyers Farm enclave, you could say the sellers went hard in the paint when crafting this one-of-a-kind lakefront mansion.

Originally constructed in 2002, the current owners, Jay and Alison Bernstein, snapped up the shingle and stone-clad estate in 2013, Mansion Global reported. The couple expanded its footprint by about 6,500 square feet in 2017, and now the swanky spread features a half-court basketball court in the attic, a golf simulation room, a manicured putting green, and a vast arena that houses an indoor tennis court that does triple-duty as an NBA-grade basketball court and a party barn. “It was built for family recreation,” Brian Milton of Compass told the listing site.

The third-floor rec room includes an half-court basketball court, along with a gym and beverage bar.

Altogether, the 18,337-square-foot residence at 9 Cowdray Park Drive comprises six bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and three half baths. You can score the whole package for a whopping $16.5 million. And, even if you’re not the tennis, golf, or basketball type, the property includes its own dock at the 100-acre Converse Lake for boating, along with convenient access to the nearby Greenwich Polo Club.

It’s not just the sporty amenities that set this palatial pad apart though. Other notable highlights are a massive floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and lofty beamed ceilings. You’ll also find formal living and dining rooms, the latter large enough to accommodate two tables, along with a spacious family room, an office, and a newly renovated kitchen replete with a butler’s pantry and a wine cellar. Elsewhere, the second floor holds the primary bedroom, which is decked out with a walk-in closet and en suite bath. Upstairs, the third level is something of a slam dunk, complete with an indoor sports court, a bar area, and a gym.

The home’s traditional architecture is softened with organic materials and a relaxed, neutral palette.

During the home’s expansion, a covered deck was added onto the back of the house, overlooking carefully maintained grounds that offer an oversized swimming pool, a hot tub, an outdoor kitchen, and a fireplace.

“Between the 24-hour gated community and the 10-acre zoning you have extreme exclusivity in this neighborhood,” added Milton. The Conyers Farm community has seen a number of record sales in the last decade. Back in 2017, Greenwich’s largest estate closed for a hefty $20 million, and Hollywood director Ron Howard sold his home for $27.5 million back in 2014. At the time, it was considered the most expensive residential transaction in Westchester County history.
