13 Photos of Directors at their Films' Cannes Premieres
Since 1946, the incomparable Cannes Film Festival has been a must-not-miss event for many. The nearly two-week-long festival, typically held in May, brings together some of the world’s best filmmakers, actors, producers, critics, and more for a truly glamorous time. Even though the glamorous affair is filled with no shortage of fancy dinners and elegant after-parties, the film premieres are perhaps some of the most anticipated events on the itinerary.
From Sofia Coppola walking the red carpet alongside Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning to a 30-something-year-old Martin Scorsese making an appearance at this famous festival in the ‘70s, ahead, we look at some of our favorite moments of directors at their Cannes film premieres.
Martin Scorsese
A young Martin Scorsese is pictured here walking into the premiere of Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. The comedy-drama, which stars Harvey Keitel and Jodie Foster, tells the story of a recently widowed housewife in New Mexico who travels to California with her young son to become a singer.
Wes Anderson

Sofia Coppola

In 1988, Ron Howard traveled to the famous festival to screen his movie Willow, which stars Val Kilmer. Even better? The picture was executive produced by George Lucas.
Alice Rohrwacher
Italian director Alice Rohrwacher enlisted her sister, Alba, and actress Monica Bellucci, to star in her 2014 drama, The Wonders, or Le Meraviglie in Italian. The film won the Grand Prix award that year, the second-most prestigious honor behind the Palme d’Or.
Jane Campion

Julian Schnabel

Noah Baumbach
Noah Baumbach traveled to the south of France to debut his film, The Meyerowitz Stories, which he wrote and directed. The film, which stars Hollywood greats like Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson, Candice Bergen, and many more, was shot in New York City.
Bong Joon-Ho
Bong Joon-Ho is pictured here walking the red carpet for the premiere of his black comedy thriller, Parasite, which was met with incredible success upon its release. The movie was the first Korean film to receive the Palme d’Or.
