1. That cute dress you wore to Linda’s wedding last year.

If you’re following the number one rule of decluttering which is to ask: ‘when was the last time I wore this?’, you’d likely find yourself throwing away a whole heap of occasion wear.

Out of everything in your wardrobe, you probably wear your ‘wedding guest dresses’ about once a year, making them the most expensive cost-per-wear items that you own. But that doesn’t mean you should chuck them. As long as you’re still wearing the items when the right opportunity comes up, then you’ll want to hang on to them.

Having a go-to rail of cute formalwear is a really important part of every wardrobe and it stops you buying every time you’re invited to a new event.

2. The dress your mum bought you for your 21st birthday party.

Hanging onto clothes with sentimental value is just like keeping that box of ticket stubs from your year out travelling – if it means something to you, hang on to it.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you should clutter up your wardrobe with clothes you will literally never wear. Instead, create an ‘archive’ suitcase or similar where you can store your most important items out of the way.

3. Your funeral outfit

As bleak as it is, we all have a smart, all-black outfit that we turn to for funerals. Keep yours stored somewhere separately if you otherwise would never wear it, but have it there just in case. On days like these, the last thing you’ll want to worry about is what to wear, so have something simple and reliable in your back pocket just in case the worst happens.

4. Those jeans that make your bum look great

Clothes should be all about making you feel confident and happy, so if you have one item that particularly brings you joy, hang on to it even if in other ways it is imperfect. Anything that leaves you staring at yourself in the mirror for that extra couple of seconds when getting ready must be working wonders for your inner confidence. No matter how old/faded it is.

5. Anything designer

Designer clothing and accessories retain value much more than high street fashion. In fact, some designer items can actually fetch more down the line, second-hand than they do brand new and in box. So, whether you plan on selling these on at some point or passing them down to your children/family in the future, whatever you do do, don't just give them away.

6. A classic leather handbag

If you have a leather handbag that looks as though it's seen better days, it could just need a bit of TLC to bring it back to its best. Try these cleaning hacks and techniques to spruce up your designer goods, or if it's past something you'll want to wear, take it to a charity shop or try selling on a second-hand website.

7. Cashmere jumpers

If you look after your cashmere well enough, you shouldn't ever have to throw these classic knits away, which is good, considering how much you probably spent on them. Make sure you only use a hand-wash setting on your machine, dry your cashmere flat, and store folded in a drawer, rather than hanging which can distort the shape. To prevent pilling or bobbling, follow these handy tips.

8. A smarter blazer

Even if you only wear it to job interviews, a good-fitting blazer is a must-have wardrobe staple. Why? Because you can usually throw it over any outfit and instantly look smart without really trying - and isn't that the dream?

9. Anything that doesn't fit but could, if you just took it to the tailors

Aren't we all guilty of hanging onto jeans that need hemming, dresses that need taking up, jackets that are missing a button and so on? It's so much easier to just add to the charity pile to save yourself the extra stress - and expense - of getting things fixed, and sometimes, that's the right thing to do. But if you've invested a fair bit of money on the item, or it fits particularly well, take a deep breath and google 'nearest tailors' and once the deed is done you won't regret it.

10. Jeans and a nice top

Because without them, what on earth would you wear on 90% of your nights out? If you want to add to your collection, check out Missguided's dedicated jeans and a nice top section on their website.

11. Go with everything, comfortable heels

If it ain't broke, why throw it away? These might be nude, these might be black, these might be metallic - whatever works for you and your wardrobe. They need to be comfortable though, or you won't be wearing them at all, even if they do 'go'.
