The weird and wonderful species to watch in 2025 have been revealed, including a paper clip-sized chameleon and giant whale sharks.
Nature conservation charity Fauna & Flora has revealed its annual 'watch list', providing insight into the creatures around the world that need our help.
European mink — one of the most threatened mammals in Europe — topped the list as numbers continue to spiral.
Habitat loss, hunting, and competition from the invasive American mink have sadly led to declining numbers. In 2025, Fauna & Flora will continue to support freshwater restoration initiatives to reconnect the mink's fragmented habitat.
Elsewhere, the unique Nguru spiny pygmy chameleon is also severely threatened by habitat loss due to agricultural expansion. Not much larger than a paper clip, it lives in Tanzanian forests where it blends in with the leaf litter and vegetation.
A species of blossoming magnolia took the 10th spot after it was discovered last year during fieldwork. With just 13 trees in the UK, it's also at risk due to the combined pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion and illegal timber extraction.
"The nature loss crisis has never been more urgent or critical to address, with countless species at risk of extinction across the globe - threatening the very ecosystems people rely on for food, water and livelihoods. And yet, 2024 ended with significant setbacks for nature and the environment," says Kristian Teleki, CEO, Fauna & Flora.
"Despite these frustrations, there are glimmers of progress and hope. Last year brought breakthroughs in aligning Nature and Climate COP processes and formalising the vital roles of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in conservation policy and decision-making.
"In times of crisis, it's essential to hold onto hope — recognising that locally driven, partnership-focused conservation efforts are not just effective but necessary. Together with our global network of partners, we're working to protect a wide range of species teetering on the brink of extinction. Here's a glimpse of the ones receiving our special attention this year."
