You don’t need to be a yoga fanatic to feel its benefits, it turns out, as a study has revealed that just 10 minutes of it a day could help to ease menopause symptoms and even depression.

In a study published in the journal Menopause, women who stretched for 10 minutes before bed, five times a week had reduced symptoms of menopause compared to those who did no yoga at all.

Yoga didn’t solve hot flushes, but it did improve the womens’ sleep quality, reduced aches and pains, and boosted their mood.

The research involved 40 Japanese women aged 40-61 being assigned to two groups. More than half of the participants were postmenopausal and nearly two-thirds had depression.

While one group was assigned to stretch for 10 minutes a day, the other remained sedentary before bed.

Throughout the study they were asked about their menopausal and depression symptoms, and the study concluded that “these findings suggest that 10 minutes of stretching before bedtime decreases menopausal and depressive symptoms in middle-aged, Japanese women.”
