The best and worst places to raise children in the UK have been revealed in a new study — and North Lincolnshire came out on top, scoring highly in all areas.

Research conducted by Oxford Home Schooling took into account a number of various factors, including school ratings, the percentage of school places available and affordability of housing.

North Lincolnshire — loved for its luscious green spaces and community spirit — scored top marks for its affordable property prices (£149,000 is the average here), as well as having plenty of brilliant schools (over 86% were rated highly by Ofsted).

Other areas in the top 10 include the idyllic coastal borough of Torbay in Devon, North East Lincolnshire and Calderdale in Yorkshire.

On the other hand, the study also found that the worst area to raise children is in Lewisham, London. Here, just 64% of schools were rated 'good' or 'outstanding' while houses average nearly £400,000. South Gloucestershire and Bristol were also found to be some of the worst areas to live with children, thanks to their expensive properties and lack of 'outstanding' schools.

"All parents want the best education for their children and many will go to extreme lengths to get them into certain schools," Dr Nick Smith, principal at Oxford Home Schooling said.

"This may involve moving house to be within certain catchment areas. For those considering such action, our research has highlighted the local authorities which offer quality education in areas where houses are most affordable."
