Two Ukrainian films nominated for European Film Awards
Two Ukrainian films, "La Palisada" and "Motherland," have received nominations for the prestigious European Film Awards.
The European Film Academy unveiled the nominees for the 2023 European Film Awards on Nov. 7, and both Ukrainian films secured nominations in their respective categories.

"La Palisada," a darkly comic detective film directed by Philip Sotnichenko, is nominated for the FIPRESCI Prize for Best Debut Film. The film draws inspiration from the aesthetics of the 1980s and 1990s and follows the story of a police detective and a forensic psychiatrist investigating the murder of their colleague. Their work is complicated by an unexpected love triangle, turbulent changes in the country, and a general sense of uncertainty about the future.
"Motherland," a documentary film, has been nominated for Best European Documentary. The film is a collaborative effort between Belarusian journalist Hanna Badziaka and director Alexander Mikhalkovich, focusing on the 2020 protests in Minsk. The film depicts the protests and sheds light on the causes and consequences of decades-long "traditions" of violent abuse, torture, and murder as methods of controlling Belarusian conscripts. The film is a co-production involving Ukraine, Sweden, and Norway.
The winners will be announced at the 36th European Film Awards ceremony in Berlin on Dec. 9, 2023.
"La Palisada" is set to premiere in Ukrainian theaters on Jan. 11, 2024.
