Supersized dresses seem to be having a moment. The red carpet at Cannes Film Festival 2019 is covered in frothy, attention-grabbing gowns, with stars including Indian film star Deepika Padukone and Thai A-lister Sririta Jensen posing for photos in outrageously over-sized creations.
From spotlight-stealing couture to a long-standing love of Alexander McQueen, take a look back at the actress' most dazzling red carpet looks.
Gwyneth Paltrow was left eating her words after she returned to the Met Gala, years after insisting she would “never go again”. Paltrow looked radiant in yellow at the lavish New York bash as she paid homage to the Camp: Notes on Fashion theme, two years after he last appearance. The Goop founder, who is married to Brad Falchuk, complained about the annual event in an interview with USA Today in 2013, claiming that she was pushed around at the “crowded” gala.
Kim Kardashian has been known to push the boat out with her fashion choices but fans think she might’ve just taken it too far. The reality star shared a string of snaps of her not-so-casual outfit from earlier this week on Instagram. Kardashian slipped into a sheer 90s-themed mesh top and leggings with a tattoo-style print plastered over it.
Taylor Swift, Eva Longoria, Priyanka Chopra and Mariah Carey were among the A-listers who descended on Las Vegas last night to attend the annual Billboard Music Awards (BMAs). In the past, the BMAs have brought out some fairly out-there ensembles. The red carpet is a more casual affair than many other awards ceremonies, so celebrities often seize the opportunity to be more playful with their attire. This year was no different. While Priyanka Chopra, Olivia Wilde, Kelly Clarkson, Cobie Smulders and Eva Longoria opted for fairly safe red carpet outfits, Taylor Swift, Cardi B and Halsey were among the celebs who selected more out-there looks to wear. Scroll to see the looks that stole the show.
From 73-year-old Helen Mirren to 51-year-old Nicole Kidman, female celebrities over the age of 50 are killing it on the red carpet this year.
‘I felt like I looked pretty good’ ... Courtney Love arrives at the Golden Globes in 2000. Photograph: Bei/Rex/ShutterstockI was going to wear Versace to the Golden Globes in 2000 – it was already in my wardrobe – but the dress I ended up wearing was from John Galliano’s Christian Dior haute couture collection that was “inspired” by homelessness [the New York Times described the contentious collection as “tasteless chic”]. My good friends Arianne Phillips [the costume designer] and Joe Mama-Nitzberg [the artist] called me and said: “You have to wear couture!” I didn’t really get couture until this. My mind was blown – I thought: “This is what they were talking about.”The dress arrived and it was ridiculous. It was straight up and down and had twine on it. On the twine there was a book of matches, glass, all this taxidermy. I remember thinking: “OK, it’s crazy-looking, but I’ll make it work.”I lived next door to Carrie Fisher at the time and Meryl Streep happened to be at her house. I put the dress in an Armani carry bag and told my daughter, Frances, to give it to Meryl. She came back with a polaroid of Meryl goofing around in the gown and I just lost it; it was so funny.I made alterations, which really changed the dress. My assistant’s boyfriend was very slender and about my height, so he became my model. I was taking bits off, sewing on to it. I bite my nails, so I wore acrylics, but they were painted turquoise with glitter streaks to match my original outfit. I am a big believer in matchy-matchy, but [when I changed my choice of dress] I didn’t have time to take them off. I also did stupid stuff like jump up and down on a mini trampoline with my arms and legs in plastic bags so I would lose sweat weight, but I fit into it and I felt like I looked pretty good.A lot went into this look and it was controversial when I wore it. I have big boobs and it was important that they didn’t fall out. I don’t think tit-tape really works and looking back I don’t know how I kept it on – it was a miracle. I think maybe I glued it.
Taylor Swift may have kept a low profile in recent months, but at the IHeartRadio Music Awards 2019 on Thursday evening she proved that she is well and truly back.
