Bikini season might feel a world away right now (for all of the reasons) but the Kardashians are already jumping on the biggest swimwear trends of spring/summer 2021. Just last week, Kim Kardashian wore a very cool bikini with criss-cross straps, which is set to be one of the major looks of next season. Now, Kourtney Kardashian, Kylie and Kendall Jenner are out here embracing yet another bikini trend, but this one has us kind of confused.

This weekend, Ky posted snaps wearing an electric blue strappy bikini in a clip promoting Kylie Skin sun cream (spf ain't a joke, folks). At first glance, you can see that the high-cut style features cute ruching details on the top and briefs, creating extra shape, layered with a retro-feel gold body chain. On closer inspection, though, the top actually looks like it's worn upside down. How can you tell? Well, it's all about said ruching, which usually sits at the base of the bikini cup, whereas here it sits along the top of the triangle:

Interesting.

Late last month, Kourtney also got in on the 'upside-down top' trend with this bright red set which she shared on Instagram with the caption "a little fun in the sun":

Unlike Kylie, Kourt decided to cross the straps once more before tying at the back of her neck, creating an added twist on the halterneck style.

Last but not least is Kendall, who actually got in on the quirky bikini top vibes last year - wearing another iteration on the bikini top, which looks like it's been flipped horizontally and, to be honest, my head kinda hurts from all this swimwear spinning:

There are a couple of possible explanations for the upside-down/sideways bikini top trend: either the bikini has been designed specifically as a 'convertible' type style. Or, alternatively, it's just a regular bikini top that's just been flipped around (because why not?).

After a bit of digging, we came across the brand behind the sets: Sommer Swim. On the label's Instagram, the label credits the Kardashians' bikinis as the 'Xena' style, available in a range of colours and print. When you visit the product page, the Xena is described as "a halter bikini top with wrap around feature and adjustable neck tie that can be worn in various different ways."

Huh. So it looks like the Kardashians are wearing their bikini tops upside down and whichever way they want, but that's exactly how it's designed. Naturally, our next question is then does that mean we can also technically create the same look with our own bikinis? Watch this space.
