Jill Biden Subtly Highlights Diplomacy in Blue Velvet Schiaparelli Gown at U.S.-France State Dinner in Paris
U.S. First Lady Jill Biden opted for a sartorial nod to diplomacy during President Joe Biden’s state dinner in France on Saturday, stepping out in velvet navy blue gown by the French design house Schiaparelli to greet France’s First Lady Brigitte Macron.
The state dinner celebrating the U.S. and France’s long-standing alliance was a star-spangled affair, with Bernard Arnault, Hélène Mercier-Arnault, François-Henri Pinault, Salma Hayek, Pharrell Williams, Helen Lasichanh, Nicolas Sarkozy, Carla Bruni, John McEnroe and Léa Seydoux among guests in attendance.

French President Emmanuel Macron hosted U.S. President Joe Biden in the sumptuous reception hall of the Élysée Palace.
Brigitte Macron wore a long white Louis Vuitton dress with transparent sleeves and buttons running up the side. While Williams, who is Vuitton’s creative director of menswear, his wife Lasichanh and Seydoux also sported the brand’s fashion.
Jill Biden’s dress featured a bateau-neck and dramatic white sash that billowed into a sweeping train, accessorized with matching navy pumps and stylish drop earrings. This ensemble not only showcased her continued style evolution to a subdued palette, but also paid homage to Franco-American fashion collaboration through the lens of Schiaparelli’s Texas-born artistic director, Daniel Roseberry.
This is not the first time Biden has chosen Schiaparelli for high-profile events. In July, marking the United States’ re-entry into UNESCO, she donned a custom Schiaparelli suit paired with black Dior slingback heels as she met with Brigitte Macron. Later, in September, Biden opted for a white Schiaparelli skirt suit adorned with gold statement buttons at the 2023 Praemium Imperiale Laureates event held in the East Room of the White House. The ensemble offered a light contrast to Hillary Clinton’s darker attire, which featured a floral brocade jacket.
Biden’s outfit selection for the state dinner was consistent with her ongoing trend of sophisticated yet meaningful fashion choices during significant international visits. Two days prior, forthe 80th anniversary of D-Day, she maintained that narrative by wearing a dark skirt suit with an ornate pattern accentuating her ensemble with carefully chosen accessories.
President Biden’s first state visit to France began on Wednesday, marking a momentous occasion centered around the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The visit unfolded with a solemn ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe, where he and President Macron honored the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Accompanied by their wives, the leaders paid tribute to army veterans and proceeded down the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, escorted by French guards on horseback, en route to the Elysée Palace.
